Lessons

'Tha ha tha jham thari tha, jham thari thaka thari thei, thadhinginathom, thakka thadhinginathom, thakka dhiku thadhinginathom'......says the Guru, in his resounding voice, wielding a thattu-kazhi in his hand and steering Akkas draped in traditional Kalakshetra sari uniforms to dance in perfect araimandis, natyarambhams and prenkhanams!

As little novices who were still in the elemental thattadavus and nattataduvs in the thatched huts of our dance class in Chennai, we grew up watching these Akkas dance in groups and gaped at them with starry eyes, wondering when we would be able to do those complex jathis and theermanams just like them!  It was enriching and fun to watch our seniors and to aspire to dance with the same finesse some day!

Our lessons are held in small groups, starting with warm-up yoga, shloka (an invocation to the Almighty) and the core lesson culminating with basic theory and tenets. Students learn and dance their part and also get to observe their seniors dance.

In the spirit of our love for dance, we are open to welcoming everyone with a genuine interest in our art form to be a part of our dance company.  If you have financial limitations yet you are looking forward to dancing with your heart and giving it your best, let nothing else deter you; we are in need of people such as yourselves.  So come on and dance with us.

Group Classes

Level 1 (Beginners)

Students learn simple adavus and Hastha Prayogas (hand gestures).

Level 2 (Intermediate)

Students learn advanced adavus, theermanams and Shiro Bhedas & Greeva Bhedas (head and neck movements).

Level 3 (Advanced)

Items in a traditional maargam, such as Alarippu, Jathiswaram, Shabdam, Varnam etc are introduced to the students at this point.  They should also be ready to perform at small venues and sangams by now.
